The surprising truth behind the world’s electric cars

The production and sale of electric vehicles accelerated in 2016, with two million cars manufactured and over 750,000 sold globally, according to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) 2017 Global Electric Vehicle report. And the market is expected to boom further in the coming years. The report predicts electric car stocks will range from between nine million and 20 million by 2020 and between 40 million and 70 million by 2025. Countries around the world are also attempting to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars, and are encouraging motorists to go green.

Scandinavian retailer Carlings has launched a new capsule that only exists digitally. Titled “Neo-Ex,” the collection works by users uploading a posed picture of themselves. Once the picture has been uploaded, and the digital pieces purchased, Carlings’ team of 3D designers fit the clothes to the image to make it appear that the user is wearing the pieces in real life. As well as being influenced by the impact of social media, “Neo-Ex” is also intended to reduce waste. Due to being digital-only, the collection is described as being “completely without negative environmental impact.”

In a recent piece, I explained why AI’s complexity shouldn’t be a deterrent for its adoption. In fact, I went as far as stating that artificial intelligence will be just as disruptive as the internet was. This is a view I am doubling down on.

As far as artificial intelligence is concerned, one industry most likely to be most disrupted is the healthcare industry. Why will AI have such an impact on the healthcare industry? Facts like the ones below are why:

These two Dutch students create 3D-printed snacks from food waste


According to the FAO, every year, roughly one-third of all the food produced for human consumption gets lost or wasted. That’s about 1.3 billion tonnes. Unsurprisingly, fruits and vegetables have the highest wastage rates of any food.

But what if we could find ways to magically turn food waste back into perfectly edible food? This is what Elzelinde Van Doleweerd and Vita Broeken, two Dutch girls in their twenties, are trying to do with their brand new company Upprinting Food.

They’re not using magic though, they’re using  3D printing.

Uber partner Fair gets $385M led by Softbank to grow its flexible car ownership model globally

California startup is aiming to turn the car market on its head by providing price-friendly, easy options for people to lease vehicles instead of buying them, and today it’s taking the latest, big step in that ambition.

Fair has raised a huge Series B funding round of $385 million led by Softbank, with participation from Exponential Ventures, Munich Re Venture’s ERGO Fund, G Squared, and CreditEase, to take its business global. Requiring just a drivers license and a credit card (or bank details), Fair provides flexible leasing plans both to everyday users, and to people who use cars for work purposes. In the last year, it has worked closely with Uber, which sold Fair its $400 million leasing business earlier this year, to equip its drivers with vehicles, and that will be a pattern it hopes to repeat with other ride-sharing providers in other markets.
